Statement of U.S. Senator Russ Feingold
On the House-Passed 527 Reform Bill
April 6, 2006
I favor legislation to address the FEC’s failure to regulate
527s, but I am concerned about the provision added in the House-passed
527 reform bill that does away with party coordinated spending limits.
527 reform must be a bipartisan effort, and including the party-spending
provision complicates that task. In all other respects, the House bill
is virtually identical to the bill I have worked on in the Senate with
Senator McCain and Senator Lott. It addresses the 527 problem in a thoughtful
and nonpartisan way and is something I could support.
