Statement
of U.S. Senator Russ Feingold
On the Chinese Government’s Suppression of the Tibetan Protests
March 24, 2008
“I am deeply concerned
about the heavy-handed tactics used by the Chinese government in response
to the Tibetan protests. I encourage the Chinese government to negotiate
with the Dalai Lama and to respect the rights of the Tibetan people.
With its suppression of the Tibetan protests, China continues to compound
its abysmal record on human rights. While I welcome Secretary of State
Rice’s call today for China to consider a new policy towards Tibet,
the administration has been slow to react to the crisis. The President
should clearly condemn the harsh, repressive tactics of the Chinese
government in Tibet.”
Senator Feingold is a
fifteen-year member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. |
