Statement of U.S. Senator Russ Feingold
On the One-Year Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina
August 28, 2006
Washington DC – U.S. Senator Russ Feingold released the following
statement today in advance of tomorrow’s one-year anniversary
of Hurricane Katrina.
"On the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, we remember
those who lost their lives, their homes, and their communities to the
hurricane. Katrina’s devastation was one of the most tragic episodes
in our nation’s history and as the people of the Gulf Coast face
the challenge of rebuilding, we must not let them face it alone. There
is much we can do – and that the government can do – to
help in this recovery, including learning from the mistakes that compounded
this disaster. But this is also a time to remember the outpouring of
support from across the country – communities welcoming evacuated
families, schools taking in displaced students, and people everywhere
asking what they could do to help. Looking back over the past year,
we see how far we’ve come but also how far we have to go. One
year after Katrina, we must rededicate ourselves to helping the people
of the Gulf Coast make it home again."
