Statement of U.S. Senator Russ Feingold
On the Attorney General’s Testimony Before the House Judiciary
Committee
April 7, 2006
We already know that the president has broken the law by authorizing
the warrantless wiretapping of American citizens making international
phone calls. But yesterday before the House Judiciary Committee, the
Attorney General refused to rule out warrantless spying on purely domestic
communications. This admission should trouble all Americans. It confirms
that the administration is pushing a legal theory that knows no limits.
Congress must not allow the President and this administration to ignore
the rule of law. The censure resolution I introduced is an appropriate
and measured response to the President’s illegal actions. Congress
must reassert its role in our constitutional system.
