Statement of U.S. Senator Russ Feingold
On General Motors - Janesville
November 21, 2005
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Russ Feingold released the following
statement today after news that the General Motors plant in Janesville
will not be closed as part of GM’s “Major Capacity Turnaround
Plan.”
"General Motors has been an integral part of my hometown of
Janesville for generations -- my grandfather, Max Feingold, bought the
first truck off the assembly line in Janesville some 86 years ago. While
my heart goes out to the workers and communities who will be hit hard
by today’s announcement, I am pleased that GM Janesville will
not be affected.
As long as GM Janesville remains open, Janesville’s dedicated
workforce, combined with the support of the city and the surrounding
communities, will ensure that high quality GM products will continue
to be manufactured in Wisconsin. I will continue to work with GM officials,
UAW members, elected officials, and others to do everything I can to
always keep a strong GM presence in Janesville."
Feingold has long been involved in fighting to maintain GM’s
presence in Janesville. Most recently he was joined by Senator Kohl
and Congressman Ryan in June in urging the Chairman and CEO of General
Motors, G. Richard Wagoner, Jr., to continue to keep GM Janesville open.
