Statement of U.S. Senator Russ Feingold
On His Meeting With
Supreme Court Nominee Harriet Miers
October 26, 2005
“I enjoyed meeting with Ms. Miers this afternoon. We discussed
a variety of issues for nearly an hour. I remain concerned about her
qualifications for the position and her ability to be independent and
objective given her close ties with the Bush Administration. I did not
learn a great deal in this meeting that helped alleviate those concerns,
but I am keeping an open mind on the nomination and will continue to
explore these issues at the public hearing.
I am troubled that Ms. Miers still feels she cannot say anything at
all about her work in the White House beyond general claims that it
has given her exposure to the workings of the government and the roles
of its three branches. The White House is doing her no favors by not
letting her discuss her work. If she wants to address concerns that
Senators have, she must be able to share more, including relevant documents,
about the past five years she spent working in the White House.”
