Russ Feingold: Statements

Statement of U.S. Senator Russ Feingold

In Reaction to the President's Address to the Nation on Iraq

March 17, 2003

The President's remarks tonight make it clear that, barring a highly unforseen change in the situation, the United States is on the threshold of war in Iraq. I do not disagree with the President's indictment of Saddam Hussein's conduct. I do, however, continue to respectfully disagree with the Administration's approach to this problem. Should events continue in this direction, our thoughts must even more intensely focus on our brave men and women in uniform. I am confident in their abilities and I hope for their safe and quick return to their families.

While in recent months the American people have rightly debated the wisdom of military action in Iraq, I am confident that the Congress and all Americans are united in our support for our troops. In the coming days and weeks, Congress must continue to be mindful of its responsibilities to the military and to our constituents, who will bear the costs and reap the consequences of our government's actions.

At the same time, we must be extremely careful not to lose sight of our first national priority, the global campaign against terrorism. The success of the campaign against international terrorist networks depends upon vigorous diplomacy, international consultation, and global cooperation, militarily and otherwise.
