Press Release of Senator Feingold

Statement of Senator Russ Feingold on the Sudanese Government's Expulsion of International Humanitarian Organizations

Friday, March 6, 2009

“I am outraged by the Sudanese government’s expulsion of several major international humanitarian organizations, and I join the Obama administration in condemning this move.  These organizations do extremely important work to save lives in the war-torn region of Darfur and other areas of northern Sudan.  If these groups are not allowed to continue their work, we are likely to see an unraveling of the current humanitarian infrastructure, which is keeping more than 4 million people alive.  I urge members of the United Nations Security Council, African Union and the Arab League to unite in making clear to the government of Sudan that these expulsions must be reversed.”

Senator Feingold is the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on African Affairs.  On Wednesday, March 4th, Senator Feingold praised the indictment of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir.  Feingold’s statement is available at http://feingold.senate.gov/record.cfm?id=309029
