Press Release of Senator Feingold

Statement of U.S. Senator Russ Feingold on Continuing Efforts to Reform the Presidential Public Financing System

Thursday, October 30, 2008

"I am optimistic about efforts to reform the presidential public financing system, which worked well for a generation, but clearly needs to be updated if it is to remain viable. It has always been my intention to introduce an updated version of my bipartisan bill to fix the system, taking into account information from the most recent presidential election. I am confident that the next President will support repairing and reforming the system. We must act to ensure the fairness of our elections and the confidence of our citizens in the process by repairing the cornerstone of the Watergate reforms."

Last December, Senator Feingold introduced the Presidential Funding Act of 2007, a bill to update the presidential public financing system for the 2012 election. More information on that bill is available at http://feingold.senate.gov/issues_presfunding.html.
