The Issues: Health Care - Protecting the Rights of Patients
In June of 2002, I voted for passage of
S.1052, the Bipartisan Patient Protection Act. I supported
this legislation because it will help ensure that patients
can access the care they need as determined by their doctors.
The bill provides that patients have access to needed health
care specialists, continuity of care protections, access to
a timely external appeals process to address health plan grievances,
and the assurance that doctors and patients can openly discuss
treatment options. In addition, this patients' bill of rights
establishes an enforcement mechanism that ensures that patients
will receive these benefits.
