Terrorism | Africa | Human Rights | Engaging Americans | Speeches Series

The U.S. must continue to be a strong voice for human rights around the world. The defense of human rights around the world is an important part of the U.S. national interest - just as economic and political considerations are. This principle defines many of my foreign policy positions and priorities.

We have a moral interest in protecting human rights, and we also have a political interest in promoting democracy and stability. We have an economic interest in encouraging development, trade and investment opportunities for American business. To protect and promote these various interests we must not waver in our steadfast support of human rights.

Since coming to the Senate in 1993, I have introduced and cosponsored legislation addressing human rights concerns in China, Tibet, Indonesia, East Timor, Nigeria, Mexico, and Colombia, just to name a few examples. I have also written numerous letters to government officials at home and abroad urging respect for human rights in specific cases.
