Somalia
I have served on the Senate Foreign Relations
Committee throughout my entire 17-year career in the
U.S. Senate. In recent years, I have worked to bring attention
to security, human rights, and humanitarian issues on the
Horn of Africa, and particularly in Somalia. I visited the
region in December 2008 to focus on regional security issues
and the threat they pose to our national security. In 2006,
Congress passed my measure requiring the administration to
develop a comprehensive stabilization and reconstruction strategy
for Somalia. The New York Times has labeled me "the Senate's
leading expert on Somalia."
